Moon Watch

The moon’s been pretty impressive in our sky at various times recently. Today’s activity is about understanding how the moon affects our tides. Full moons and new moons give us the big spring tides, while half moons give us the smaller neap tides. If you live somewhere like Galway, which regularly floods, understanding the tides is really helpful, because if a storm coincides with spring tides, the chances of flooding are much greater. This activity explains how the moon affects the size of the tides, and all you need is 3 balls of different sizes (the moon, the earth and the sun!), paper, scissors, colours, and a mini-figure!!!
